Suspected Bosnian War Criminal Arrested in Alabama After Decades in Hiding

Hamdija Alukić, now a 70-year-old family man, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Mobile, Alabama, for the brutal murders of two civilians in 1992 war crimes, WALA-TV reports.

Alukić lived in Alabama for decades as a seemingly ordinary man. Neighbors described him as a "cool" neighbor who sold eggs to Walmart. No one suspected that behind his peaceful life lay a dark past.

According to court documents, he and other paramilitary members allegedly ambushed a car, after which they shot the driver and set the vehicle on fire while the body was still inside.

This case serves as a reminder that justice for war crimes committed during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina has still not been fully realized. Many suspects fled to other countries and lived for years under false identities or in the silence of their new communities.

U.S. authorities have worked for years to identify and locate suspected war criminals hiding on U.S. soil. The arrest of Alukić represents an important step in efforts to ensure that all those responsible for crimes finally face justice.

Alukić is currently in custody awaiting extradition. Details regarding further legal proceedings have yet to be released.
